MFA: What Is It?
MFA, or Multi-Factor Authentication, is the process of utilizing more than 2 forms of verification for authenticating a user's sign in. Most online services and tools that require a login safeguard their system and your accounts utilizing MFA because it makes it much more difficult for malicious actors to break into MFA secured systems. MFA does not make a system impenetrable, as with 99.999% of systems and services, those protected by MFA are still susceptible to user error and undisclosed vulnerabilities in the systems and services themselves. MFA utilizes at least 3 methods of verification to securely authenticate users: Something Known: This is a username or email address Something that is Secret: This can be password, passphrase, PIN, or Biometrics Something Unique: Single Use or one-time passcodes are often supplied at the time of verification, either through app, hardware token, or messaging service. Users should do their best to protect all 3 listed methods. Avoid using your work email address for signing up to new services or sites. IT can provide an alias to you if you need to sign up for any new accounts. Keep passwords secure (not on a sticky note or on your desk) Use a password manager. IT has approved LastPass and KeyPass and can assist in the setup and configuration of these. Do not re-use passwords across different accounts Do not share your passwords and PINs Do not disclose or show single user or one-time passcodes to any person These easiest, most reliable, and most secure method for using multi-Factor authentication is by using an authenticator application. For HPG Employees it is strongly recommended that you use the Microsoft Authenticator Application, installed on your Smart Phone. The features of this are listed below: Allows for Password less Authentication (yes, you read that correctly. With the Microsoft Authenticator app, you no longer need to enter your password. It will use your username, biometrics (PIN) already used on your phone, and provide a random single use code response.) It can be used entirely offline, as can most multi-Factor authentication applications. (This ensures that you can always sign in, regardless of internet or cell phone signal availability) It is more reliable and faster (Text or email can be disrupted by signal quality or spam filtering) It is more secure note: If your phone or hardware token is lost or stolen inform HPG IT immediately so that we can reset your MFA configuration. Note: Avoid using email as your MFA method. Email is insecure and often leads to compromised accounts.

Phishing: Report Malicious Phone or Text Messages (Android)
When you receive phishing messages through text or phone call, you should report and block the sender. Below you will find the 3 reporting methods and guides you should use to report messages. Note: If the message is impersonating an employee of HPG, please also inform HPG IT. How to report phishing text messages from the Messages app When you get a phishing text message in your inbox, you can report them with a few quick taps. The Google Messages app is the default method for sending messages on many Android phones, so you likely have it installed. Other messages apps likely have a similar feature and steps, but we will not address those apps specifically. Open the Messages app on your phone. Long-press the phishing text message you want to report. Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner. Select the Block option. The Report spam box should be checked by default, so press the OK button to continue. That phishing text message has now been blocked and reported as spam to Google and your wireless carrier. Report phishing text messages to phone carriers (USA) Most phone carriers in the U.S. allow you to report phishing text messages by forwarding the message to 7726 or SPAM. The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) has designated 7726 (spells SPAM) for reporting spam texts, and most U.S. carriers are part of the program. Whether you use Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, you can forward a text message to report it. The best part is that this message doesn't count toward your mobile plan. If you don't have unlimited messages, you can use this service without paying extra money. Follow the steps below to forward a phishing text message on your Android smartphone. Long-press on the message to select it and open the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner. Choose the Forward option Send the message to 7726 Report smishing messages to FTC and FCC You can also report smishing message attempts to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC). When you report a message to FTC on its fraud reporting website, the data is shared with law enforcement agencies. Similarly, you can file a report with FCC by visiting its consumer complaint center website. Phishing: Block, filter, and report messages on iPhone
In the Messages app , you can block unwanted messages, filter messages from unknown senders, and report spam or junk messages. Block messages from a specific person or number In a Messages conversation, tap the name or number at the top of the conversation. Tap the info button, scroll down, then tap Block this Caller. To view and manage your list of blocked contacts and phone numbers, go to Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts. See the Apple Support article Block phone numbers, contacts, and emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Filter messages from unknown senders With iMessage, you can filter messages from unknown senders, and you won’t get notifications from them. Go to Settings > Messages, scroll down to Message Filtering, then turn on Filter Unknown Senders. When this setting is on, you can only see messages from people who aren’t in your contacts when you go to Filters > Unknown Senders. Note: You canʼt open any links in a message from an unknown sender until you add the sender to your contacts or reply to the message. Report spam or junk messages When you use iMessage, you can report spam messages to Apple. Depending on your carrier and country or region, you can also report spam you receive with SMS and MMS. In the list of messages, touch and hold the spam message, then tap Report Junk. Or, if you’ve opened the message, scroll to the bottom of the message, tap Report Junk, then tap Delete and Report Junk. The sender’s information and the message are sent to Apple, and the message is permanently deleted from your device. Note: Reporting junk or spam doesn’t prevent the sender from sending messages, but you can block the number to stop receiving them. If you don’t see the option to report spam or junk messages you receive with SMS or MMS, contact your carrier. See the Apple Support article Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone.
